On
March 26, 1995, His Holiness Srimat Swami Bhuteshanandaji Maharaj, the
then President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission,
inaugurated the Permanent Exhibition on Swami Vivekananda in the
Temple basement of Sri Ramakrishna Temple. The exhibition through
photos, paintings, and sketches covers important facets of Swamiji’s
life with recorded commentary in English. At the present, this
exhibition is one of important sight for foreign tourists who visit
Delhi.
A number of visitors and many distinguished citizens of the country
have visited the exhibition and have recorded their high appreciation
of the exhibition in the Visitors’
Book.
In
the Exhibition, some important facets of Vivekananda’s life are being shown through photos, paintings, sketches,
and these have been divided into thirteen sections. Each section and
each photo contain a suitable narration at the bottom to provide an
insight into Vivekananda’s
personality.
Swami
Vivekananda used to call himself the "Calcutta
boy". He spent his good days of childhood, school, and college life
in his ancestral home at No.
3 Gourmohan Mukherji Street,
Calcutta.
Vivekananda’s
mother was a deeply religious woman and his younger brothers were gems
in their respective fields.
| Section 2: Narendranath meets Sri
Ramakrishna |
Vivekananda’s
meeting with Sri Ramakrishna marks the beginning of a new chapter in the
spiritual life of Narendranath. Sri Ramakrishna confides the innermost
secrets of his heart to Narendranath.
| Section 3: Sri Ramakrishna’s training
of Narendranath |
Gradually
Narendranath’s
opposition gives way to complete surrender to Sri Ramakrishna. The inner
history of Narendranath’s
conversion and illuminations is very subtle. Every evening Sri
Ramakrishna calls Narendranath to his room and imparts necessary
instructions and advises him to keep his brother disciples together to
guide and train them so that they will be able to live a life of
renunciation.
| Section 4: Baranagore Math – The
first monastery of Ramakrishna Order |
Narendranath
and his brother disciples take the vows of Sanyasa and become
full-fledged monks dedicating their lives to the realization of God and
good of the world. The word ‘Baranagore’
is synonymous with austere spiritual practices.
| Section 5: Vivekananda’s Bharat
Parikrama |
Swami
Vivekananda’s
Bharat Parikrama is one of the most significant events in the history of
the modern world, for it prepared the ground for Swamiji’s
going to the West to deliver to the world the spiritual message of India
which found its consummate expression in the life and teachings of his
Master Sri Ramakrishna. The awakening of the national consciousness of India
actually begins with Swamiji’s
Bharat Parikrama.
| Section 6: Vivekananda in the West |
Equally
important is Swami Vivekananda’s
participation in the world Parliament of Religions held in Chicago,
for it gave a new perspective of Religion to the world. It started on a
note of one religion being superior to another, but it ended with the
acceptance that all religions are equally valid. The credit for this
lies largely with Swami Vivekananda.
Swamiji’s
teaching finds acceptance with some intellectuals, liberal clergymen and
persons in different fields. The news media extends a warm welcome to
him. Swamiji makes some disciples who are devoted to his Western and
Indian work.
| Section 7: Vivekananda’s triumphant
return to India |
The
people of Colombo,
Madras
and Calcutta
give a rousing reception to Swami Vivekananda with great joy and
enthusiasm.
| Section 8: Vivekananda tours India with
his disciples and his clarion call to his motherland |
Vivekananda
tours extensively the Northern and Western
India with his
brother disciples and his Western and Indian disciples.
| Section 9: Vivekananda’s disciples |
Vivekananda
had many American, British and French disciples who helped him in
various ways in India
and abroad. His monastic disciples, who became the second generation of
the Ramakrishna Order, contributed a lot for the spiritual and material
upliftment of India.
| Section 10: Vivekananda’s Practical
Vedanta |
Vivekananda
was very happy to see his ideas translated into action by his brother
disciples and by his own disciples.
| Section 11: Vivekananda at Belur Math
(Kolkata) |
Vivekananda
constantly inspired the monks and brahmacharins towards a life of
intense spirituality and service, for Atmano Mokshartham Jagadhitaya
cha, i.e.’ One’s own emancipation and the good of one’s
own fellow men.’
| Section 12: Inception of the
Ramakrishna Movement |
Some
ideas of Vivekananda are translated into action by the Ramakrishna Math
and Ramakrishna Mission.
| Section 13: Tributes to Swami
Vivekananda by Artists |
Selected
artists pay their rich tributes to Swamiji through their creative
imagination.
