Free T. B. Clinic

HospitalThe Ramakrishna Mission Free T.B. Clinic, which was started in 1933 at Paharganj, Delhi in a rented building with meager funds, has grown into a magnificent center, catering its services to the millions of poor, needy and diseased during these long years. When the concept of outdoor T.B. Clinic was not in vogue and not tried in India, Ramakrishna Mission was bold enough to start the Free T.B. Clinic for the first time in India.

This Clinic has the distinction of being the first institution in the Delhi metropolis to fight the scourge of tuberculosis in a systematic way and is still the only non-official institution of its kind in the Delhi State. The objects of the Clinic are to (a) diagnose individual cases (b) handle cases fit for treatment at the clinic (b) keep the patient under observation (d) examine the contacts of patients (e) provide Chemo prophylaxis (f) give health education to the patient as well as to the community (g) treat patients under the domiciliary services scheme

The Clinic has facilities for diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and it is fully equipped with One X-ray unit A 200 MA (70 mm camera attached) and a Clinical laboratory with facilities for routine bacteriological examinations, including some specialized examinations. The clinic staff consists of Senior Chest Physicians, Medical Officers, and requisite number of Para-medical staff, nursing staff, dispenser, X-ray technicians, and assistants.

As most of the TB patients are poor and cannot afford nutritious diet, the clinic started distributing milk, and costly medicines like anti-biotic, anti-TB drugs, vitamins, were supplied free to all patients, including those covered by the Central government Health Scheme. During the year 1999-2000, 11,839 patients received these medicines. Free injections to 1,188 patients were administered during the period under review. The total numbers of outdoor cases treated in the clinic during the year 1999-2000 were 22,906 of which 5138 were new cases.
