Proposed Plan of The Temple The temple is modeled on the lines of the one at the Belur Math. The decision taken for the size of main Shrine was 20ft.x20ft. and it was to house a life size marble image of Sri Ramakrishna seated on a white marble lotus. The prayer hall as a whole was planned 146 ft. x 54 ft. and rise to a height of 71ft. to the highest point of the central dome. The construction work commenced in April-1955 and continued throughout the year 1955 up to 1957 and was completed by the Oct. 1957. During this construction period, the laborers were given milk and ghee daily and also on different festivals and occasions of birthdays’ of saints and sages; they were fed sumptuously in the Ashrama premises. Dedication Ceremony of the Temple The dedication ceremony of the temple of Sri Ramakrishna at Belur Math has set the pattern for dedication of temples at other centers. Following the same way the Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi dedicated the temple of Sri Ramakrishna, brief report of which is as follows. The most important event of the year 1957 in New Delhi was the dedication of the New Temple in November 1957 by Srimat Swami Sankaranandaji Maharaj, President, Ramakrishna Math and Mission, who had earlier laid its foundation stone on November 5, 1954. 110 Monks of the Ramakrishna Order, including the President, the General Secretary, and six other trustees of the Belur Math, coming from various centers in India and Ceylon took part in the four days function connected with the dedication. The temple constructed on the pattern of architecture made in marble divisible into three parts, the main Shrine with a marble statue of Sri Ramakrishna seated on a lotus, a big prayer hall with accommodation for a few hundred devotees and the picturesque front.
Dedication ceremony with all its rituals in the Holy presence of Most Rev. Swami Sankaranandaji Maharaj on 28th Nov, 1957 (seated on ground - Swamis 1.Hitanandaji 2.Omkaranandaji 3.Ranganathananaji 4.Akunthanandaji) The celebrations began on the 27th morning with Vastu Puja and Havan by three Maharastrian Pandits brought specially from Varanasi. Sweet sahanai music in the early morning hours of the 28th November ushered in the sacred day of Installation. At 7 a.m. a procession carrying the pictures of Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and Swami Brahmananda, which were being worshipped in the shrine since the opening of the centre, preceded and followed by groups chanting Vedas, singing bhajans and the train of monks and devotees started from the old shrine and after going round the temple, entered the inner shrine where the four pictures were placed in front of the life size marble image of Sri Ramakrishna. After preliminary worship Srimat Swami Sankaranandaji Maharaj, supreme head of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission, performed the installation ceremony at 8.15 a.m. This was followed by special puja and havan and arati. At 1 p.m. nearly 2,000 devotees were served Prasad sitting. At 5.45 p.m. there was arati followed by bhajans till 8 p.m.
On the 29th morning there was Rudra patha and havan from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. In the evening from 5-45 to 6.15 p.m., there was a two-hour flute recital by Shri Pannalal Ghosh of the All India Radio, which was attended by over 1,500 people. On 30th morning, early at 4 a.m., there was Viraja Homa by the Sannyasins in the prayer hall of the new temple. There was Vedic Chanting by South Indian priests in the morning, in the evening there was Ramanama Sankirtanam from 4.30 to 5.30 p.m., arati and bhajans from 5.30 to 6 p.m. and dedicatory public meeting from 6.15 to 7.30 p.m. under the presidentship of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, President of India.
The President arrived at 6.15 p.m. and was received in front of the Mission’s Library by Lala Shri Ram, President, and Swami Ranganathanandaji, Secretary of the Delhi Centre. After taking him around the library and temple the President was led to the dais at 6.30 p.m. The meeting commenced with vedic invocation after which Swami Ranganathanandaji gave a short welcome speech and presented an album of pictures of the temple to the President. At his request the President then presented a copy of the album each to (1) Shri A.R Davar, the silent and unostentatious donor of the temple .(2) Shri G.R Ranade, the honorary architect ,(3) Shri Chanan Ram Uppal , the honorary supervising engineer , and (4) Shri Ho Ram, Mistry. He requested the president to dedicate the Temple of Sri Ramakrishna to peace and human unity through God. The President then addressed the gathering extempore for 10 minutes in Hindi. He dwelt on the need of religion to counter the distractions of our present atomic age, stressed the significance of the life and massage of Sri Ramakrishna for the modern world seeking for peace and harmony, praised the work of the Ramakrishna Mission in India and abroad, and referred feelingly to his indebtedness to the Mission since the early years and he concluded by expressing the hope that the citizens of India’s Capital city would take the fullest advantage of the new temple which he was very happy to dedicate to the glory of the one who represented the spirit of all religions in his own person.
